Amsterdam is one of the world’s most multicultural cities, with 180 different nationalities represented in its population. This diversity can be sensed and seen across the city, in the people from all over the world who have chosen to base their life and work in the Dutch capital. This unique genetic make-up has turned Amsterdam into a creative hub – just one of the many reasons why they feel so at home at Mendo as creators and sellers of books.

‘These spaces speak volumes about the personalities of the people who design and inhabit them’

Amsterdam was originally founded during the 13th century as a small settlement by the dam built in the river Amstel. The port city – and the famous network of 16th and 17th century canals constructed around the swamp settlement – is now a rapidly growing metropolis that continues to expand to the present day. Each year, the city attracts growing numbers of visitors from all over the world, and Amsterdam is increasingly favoured as a base for large and small businesses from across the globe.

’Mokum’, as the city is also known, is home to a world-famous red-light district, countless coffee shops and, of course, the Canal District, which earned a place on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2010. But the Amsterdam we live in is an even larger, more diverse and special place. In this book, you’ll discover images beyond those you already know from postcards, and get a glimpse behind the facades of Amsterdam’s traditional and modern architecture. The interiors of majestic canal-side houses, luxury hotels, creative workspaces and ultra-modern apartments all bear witness to Amsterdam’s distinctive interior design movement.
